Commemorative Coins :
India Government Mint, Mumbai also manufactures commemorative coins apart from
manufacturing circulation coins. These coins are issued to commemorate events of historical
and social importance and to celebrate various accomplishments of public and private
organizations. India Government Mint, Mumbai has been releasing commemorative coins since
1964. The commemorative coins issued by the Mint are of very high quality and have a great
demand among coin collectors and numismatists.
Commemorative coins are of two types
Proof Coins
Uncirculated Coins
Proof Coins:
Proof coins are the high quality commemorative coins which have a frozen effect on the surface
design of the coin with a mirror finish. These coins are marked with the symbol ‘M’ to indicate
that they are manufactured at Mumbai Mint. These coins are sold at a premium price as they
are manufactured with high quality standards and have high numismatic value.
Uncirculated Coins:
Uncirculated coins are the high quality commemorative coins which have mirror finish on the
surface but without any frozen effect on the design. These coins are marked with a diamond
symbol to indicate they are stamped at Mumbai Mint. The uncirculated coins are also sold at
premium but they are priced a little lower than the proof coins.
History
In 1964 production of commemorative coins was started. The first commemorative coin was in
the memory of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was one of the greatest parliamentarians of India, born on 25th December 1924 in Gwalior, in today’s Madhya Pradesh. He did his post-graduation in political science from DAV College Kanpur. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was Member of Parliament for over four decades having been elected to Lok Sabha, ten times and twice to the Rajya Sabha. He was the most respected and regarded politician, leader and parliamentarian cutting across different sections of the society and political spectrum. He served as Prime Minister of India for three terms 1996, 1998-1999 and 1999-2004. Twice he led Indian delegation to UN at least seven times. The nation has honored him with Padma Vibhushan and Best Parliamentarian Award.
11th May 1998 was truly a golden day when as Prime Minister of India he announced to the nation and rest of the successful underground nuclear test in Pokhram. At the same time he made it clear India’s stand on nuclear weapon that India wanted peace, harmony. He also sought to improve diplomatic relation with Pakistan, travelling to Lahore by Bus. He steered country to victory in 1999 Kargil War. He undertook many reforms measures with regards to the country and keeping it on the liberalization track including initiation of Golden quadrilateral project.
He was also conferred with country’s highest civilian award “Bharat Ratna” In year 2015. True to his name, Atalji is an eminent national leader, an erudite politician, a selfless social worker, forceful orator, poet, journalist and indeed a multifaceted personality.
